Ice, Bubbles & Frost
by Nick Bristol
This is a picture I made this morning in the back waters of the Wisconsin River. I was out to photograph the sunrise in a new location and ran across this small stream. The bubbles were under a thin sheet of clear ice and the frost was on top of the ice (of course). I watched this for quite awhile while trying to figure out how I would make a picture. The bubbles were actually moving slowly so I used iso 400 to get a little faster s/s. Very cold, but forgot about it while enjoying the bubbles under the ice.
7D, 24-105@105, iso 400, f/9 and 1/40 sec.

What a fabulous find in nature! Cold sure, but aren't you glad you have this! Excellent detail and your processing for color and contrast looks spot on to me.
This hasn't been mentioned, so take this with a grain of salt.... but you might consider cropping some from EITHER the left or right. This is an amazing ice abstract, but I find myself popping back and forth between the bubbles and the crystals. Might not even be something that anyone else thinks or cares about, so consider it a very minor opinion...

By the way, you had asked where my shot was taken, it was Bond falls ;~}
Lon, I do have another comp that goes along with your thought. Shot it with more bubbles and just a little frost on the right edge. I appreciate your input on that.
Thanks Matt. I kind of wondered if it was Bond Falls, but wasn't quite sure. You did a great job coming up with a different view and look there! I plan to go there this winter. Nick
