Belted Kingfisher

Sugar Land TX. December 26, 2010

D3 ISO 250 300/2.8 with 2x tc. f5.6 1/800s -0.7ev. From car window. Natural Light. Not Baited. About 30% FF.

This Kingfisher lives about a mile from my home. I have been waiting in my car near this perch he favors for long periods of time for him to come and sit. One day I sat there in my Quick Camo for about an hour, but he never came-don't know if he was avoiding the new structure or just bad luck. I'll go back to get closer, but I'm such a fan of these birds that I wanted to post what I did get.

Nice catch Angela, I haven't been able to fill more than a few pixels with one of these guys, this is a very nice image. I love the perch and the BG is scrumptious. Sweet pose and a nice catch light - detail is quite good, especially for such a large crop - well done.

beautiful comp and setting, Angela. this is really nice. I'm with Rich--I'd keep at this guy with the camo til I get this shot from closer up--it's worth it!

I'd be pleased with this, Angela. The techs are all good and with that comp and perch it works very well.

I'm green with envy -what a beautiful shot. The pose is perfect and as others have said, the BG is fabulous. I also have one of these little guys very close by, but haven't been able to capture him yet.

I'd be delighted if this were mine Angela - much better than I've been able to get on the species. I particularly like the background - the colors and the way the kingfisher is framed by the OOF branches. There's a narrow halo around the bird, especially noticeable at the beak, that should be easy to remedy.

Angela, this is one of my most favorite kingfisher images ever. Love the soft focus on the bg and shallow dof. Really nice :jump:

I think these are the most unusual birds. The beak seems too big for the body. Angela, this is a beautiful image! The BG is so lovely, composition is impeccable, sharpness is excellent, and love the catch light in the eye. I have never seen this bird, but would love to meet up with him some day.

Wonderful shot as posted, Angela. Congratulations for getting this close. Even being more than willing to admit a large crop, I can't get close enough to these guys to obtain a shot this nice. :toast:
