Repost - Osprey With Fish

Day one with my new 500! It was a cold windy day in Houston, so I layered and braved the elements. I was anxious to see what this new lens would do. The operator need some more practice, but at least I have something to post.

I think this is a white-tailed hawk. Correct me if I'm wrong. I photographed this hawk about 500 feet from my house. Any comments are welcomed.

7D, 500 mm F/4 IS, 1/1600, F/4.0, +1.67, ISO 400
Gitzo with new Wimberly WH-2 (sweet)
No crop! I've never been able to say that before

:jump: I backed off the sharpening on the small post, but I think I should have left it alone. Large version looks better to me.

Sweet shot!...love the outreached wings.
Yep, it's an Osprey and if it frequents this pole you're a lucky photographer!
Enjoy the 500 and here's to lots of upcoming photos!

Wow, great!!! Congrats on the new lens ! We'll have a great time, all of us, in Texas!!!
Osprey often have favorite places to perch and eat - so it's likely this one will be back here often - what luck to live so close!
Fine shot with nice detail. You're even a tad close (bet you never heard that before!) and could add a bit on the right by cloning in some canvas. you might also clone OUT the wires on the lower left.
Excellent!

Sweet image, Dottie. Detail and exposure look excellent. You'll enjoy the lens-I'll guarantee it. If you do songbirds, the 1.4 teleconverter is also a handy device and it works very well with this lens on a tripod. :toast:

I like the pose Dottie. Nice detail, surprising dof for f4. The beak merges a bit with the primary feathers, a bit of bad luck there. I wouldn't crop the wire on the left, but would add some canvas on the right. Congratulations on the new lens!!! It WILL make a difference.

I love the spread wings and the ready for action pose. I think you definitely need to add some canvas on the right.

It only took me two days to add canvas to this image. I didn't know how to do it, so I had to do my homework. Thanks Sandy. It looks much better. I didn't have the energy to clone out the electric stuff

Really nice re-post! Very good work!!!

As with everything else, PS takes time and patience to learn.
and there are always new things to learn too!
Frankly, all i ever wanted to be was a good photographer - I didn't want to have to learn a million computer programs!
