Every now and then I get this urge to break the rules......

This is very nice, Tom. I think it is done very well, and I really enjoy looking at it. My first thought with this was a Bev Doolittle painting. Now I'm just looking to see what all I can find hidden in there. Excellent work, Tom.

It's a bit too chaotic for my personal tastes, I must admit. My eyes don't know what to do.

I like this, Tom. It looks very, very cold and like you could really get lost in there.

I like it alot. I like the strength of the trees against the sway of the branches. My only suggestion would be to accentuate the contrast between the trunks (human body)(stability) the branches (arms/legs)(movement) and weather/snow (enviornment).
So, maybe a little more contrast.

Not sure what rule you're breaking there Tom?
Now I'm a big fan of capturing chaotic scenes like this and I look for stuff like this all the time. For me, this one just almost works. I mean, just a little bit more separation with the whiter trunks up front from the background, or a slightly dense, or less dense arrangement of trunks... or more or less of the bases. Not sure if I can explain what I'm seeing or not seeing. Confused yet?
I really like the tonality of the trunk on the right. Almost like if there was just a vertical of that trunk, OR the front left trunk look similar....
Here's a thought, how about cropping about 1/4 from the top; simplifies the chaos a bit?
Sorry I'm probably not being very helpful and not sure what kind of feedback or comments you're looking for. I think this little forest scene has great potential.
