Clinging to the Past

One of my favorite things about the bare trees in winter is when they still have some of the leaves clinging to them. When I came across these trees I was happy to see so many still hanging on. A little tighter and more detailed shot from the same day as my last few. I hope you enjot it, and thank you for your thoughts. Large version included.

1/5sec, F/11,

Thanks

Hi,Chris - very stong image! The snow-dusted, stark trees contrast wonderfully with the remaining red leaves. Great variety of receeding trunks, anchored by the big guy on the right.
Love it !

Fantastic, Chris. Your tighter composition is superb with the large tree on the right. The pattern of the snow covered branches really becomes evident and exquisite, and add in the warm tones of the leaves ... incredible. The large image is wonderful.

Chris, I enjoy the warm colors of the leaves standing out from the nearly monochromatic background. A fine and serene composition.

Hi Chris,
Great composition for this tree-scape. Nice the snow clinging on the barks. It gives more contrast and separation to the different trees.

Another nice photo for your collection Chris. The leaves hanging on look good and stand out beautifully. I might bump up the snow a touch looks a little too grey on my monitor. Lovely photo. Cheers

Great shot Chris. Really nice comp. I really enjoy the winter trees when they still have some leaves too. With all the oaks we have there are always some around. Nice work on this!

I really like your comp here and the color of the dried leaves against the snow. Nice contrasts of color and tones. You had a gold mine on this trip! Another strong image.

Nice capture Chris, the colorful leaves really add a lot to this scene, and I think you've portrayed exactly what you intended to here. Nice work.

I love it. I can see how this might work in B&W but I'm partial to the yellow leaves still hanging off the trees.

Beautiful scene, Chris. The arrangement of trees is done so well. The splash of red/bown leaves adds some nice color. It could just be my uncalibrated work monitor, but I would be tempted to add a tiny bit more contrast to the highlights.

Wonderful image, I'm jealous of the conditions you had! :toast:

From the thumbnail, I thought this was B&W. However, I love the hint of amber leaves left behind. I like the contrast of the dark trunks and snow as well..... an exquisite winter scene.

Me too, now. The leaves are the perfect spice for this image.

Beautiful Chris. I totally agree that the leaves clinging to autumn really add the right touch to this winter scene from El Cap Meadow. Of course we have so many of these images of these trees now that it's only natural to compare.... and if I had a favorite, it would be the wider view of this grove that you posted last week. But this one ain't half bad....

I do like the strength of the larger tree on the right that anchors the scene.

You came home with a fabulous collection from the very short trip. Congrats! :toast:

When you share images like this one, it makes me wish you were working in 4x5 so that someone would have the opportunity to experience the fullness of detail in your excellently composed scene. Have you thought of trying stitching photos in situations like this?

Kent,
Thanks, I do stitches. The pano a couple of posts back is a stitch of 5 vereticals. I just never think to do it with my tighter and more intimate compositions. But I definately could have with this scene. I'll try and keep it mind next time out. I've been wanting to upgrade for a couple of years now to more resolution, but can't afford what I want. So I have countered that with trying to do more stitches.

Thanks,
Chris

What was that crack like a 75mm cannon going off echoing among the sleeping trees. Oh, another sheet of ice has worked loose from the frozen face of Upper Yosemite falls and fallen to destruction. But within moments the hush returns, and winter's silent reverie enfolds the snow blanketed tree limbs and not even the whisper of a breeze disturbs the still hanging veterans of fall.

My feeble attempt at describing in words what your image means to me. Chris.

Sometimes when I see these images of Yosemite or am there myself I wonder if John Muir was alive today how good of a nature photographer would he have been? He only had words due to the limitations of Black and White photography in his day. but they served him well.

Paul,

Not a feeble attempt at all. Rather, an articulate, elegant, and moving expression of your thoughts, that honor me! Thank you!

Hi Chris, I am late with commenting on your image. I need to catch up due to my absence. I think this one could not be any better. Very coherent composition, the frame is filled up perfectly. The fresh snow on the trunks is just great. A wonderful winter scene.
