Ocean's Calling

Went out to the Atlantic coast this morning, as a clearing storm looked to make for nice sunrise conditions. This was the second or third shot I took, and it was meant to be a set up shot to test exposure and settings. But the next incoming wave drenched me and my equipment and by the time I got everything cleaned off (lens was still foggy), the light had dissipated. This is a 15 second exposure, f/20, ISO 50, Canon 5DII, Nikon 14-24 with adapter. I've gone back and forth with making it a 4x5 crop and cropping the upper part of the sky, but thought I would post the full frame for the critique. Thanks for looking.

I love this style and this is a superb example. The mix of soft/ethereal patterns throughout the frame and detailed ones in the foreground is striking.

I like the photo as is, Chris. I think the higher vertical sweeps you into the picture. I would, though, love to see a horizontal version of this with more of the foreground rocks in it. Otherwise, nicely done!

Wow I love the whole sky, especially the cloud streaks and color. The whole image is so ethereal and dreamy. I'm not sure that the foreground rocks are complimenting the image though. They seem like they're anchoring my eye down at the bottom of the frame instead of flowing vertically. I like the top part of the sky, but I think a 4x5 crop would fix that problem for me.

Thanks Paul. The protruding front element of the nikon 14-24 does not allow for GND, this was a single exposure. I did have to lighten the rocks a little.

The long exposure works very nicely here and the colors are fantastic!

Looks very nice, Chris. I'd like to see a cropped version to compare, but I'm kinda leaning that way.

Thanks, Gary. Here is the cropped version. The more I look at it I think I like the full version better, due to the weight of the sky. Though my mind could change tomorrow.

Chris: As for the crop - I was thinking of the other way. I can post what I mean if you like.

Cheers,

Less rock, more sky. Opps, my bad; I may have 'accidentally' added a very slight contrast curve when I was cropping.

Lovely contrast between the stoic rocks, placid sea, and animated sky. Personally, I always prefer as much sky as possible, especially when its presentation could stand on its own as this one does. I like this as is! :toast:

Full frame for sure. The cloud movement is more exaggerated at the top which is a real plus IMO. Nicely handled light.

Love the composition, Chris. The centered rock in the foreground works very well; interesting how the far flat-looking cloud seems to mimic the main rock in the foreground. I really like the image as presented without any further cropping. Really a superb image. Hope your gear is okay from getting drenched.

Chris,

I love the effect of the long exposure and the motion created in the clouds. Wonderful, soft colors. I too think the whole sky is compelling and important and was going to suggest the crop that Gary has provided. I really like that rendition - including added contrast.

Very beautiful seascape.

it's interesting what a crop can do. the crop changes the emphasis on the rocks completely. In the original, i found the rocks a distraction, too removed from the centrepiece of the image - which I found to be the sky - in its entirety. I was in fact contemplating a rock to remove the rocks. but with the top chopped off, it works more coherently than the original but i'd be also interested to see the effect with the rocks chopped off.

I prefer the original crop in which the lower right hand rock balances the image a little better for me. Wonderful image all round, great work! Tristan

This is really nice, Chris. The colors are beautiful. I like the original full frame the best. The detail in the rocks is wonderful.

I think you made the right choice leaving it full frame Chris, it gives us a great view of the sky and emphasises the movement very nicely. Colours are nice, and good sharp detailed foreground.

Gary.

Chris, IMO, I like the 1st post you did, the sky is to cool to crop, and the rocks need the breathing room  I like this image !!
