Winter on Roan Massif!

Hey everyone,

It's been a long while since I last posted but things look to be mellowing out for me. I hope to be able to spend a little more time here at NPN. This photograph was taken a couple of weeks ago up on Round Bald of the Roan Highlands. Yes, it was cold, somewhere around 0 as the sun went down. We've had an incredible winter here.

EOS 5D mark II w/ TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II (still my favorite lens!)

This is great Jerry, love the natural frame created by the overhanging boughs. There appears to be some haloing going on around the top of the center tree, perhaps due to web compression. :toast:

Zack, I noticed the very slight haloing as well but it's not in the full res file. This is a single exposure. I'll work with the compression again and see if it disappears and repost. Though it will be tomorrow before I can do that. Thanks for the note.

A wonderful first post after being off line here for awhile now, Jerry. The detail here is super, would love to see in the larger version too.
As a side note. I stopped by your site the other day and saw your video / audio setup, a pretty sweet arrangement. Looks like it was ready to hit the back-roads for some action.

Great light and framing. Kinda want some clouds but then again the negative space is really nice. Fun!

Man, I bet it was truly special up there in the snow. I really like the creative composition and that sunstar is sweet. Good work, Jerry.

Beautiful scene, Jerry, im so jealous cuase its dry brown and warm here...
Some real tricky lighting, and you handled it real well (if you have any tips on avoiding flare, im all ears!)
Im a bit undecided about the top framing. On the one hand, it eats up some of the sky and it is a scenic frame--but on the other it feels heavy (like its going to fall on my head) and the rest of the scene feels light and airy to me. Ill have to sleep on that one. But i really like it overall.

Fantastic image Jerry. Love the natural snow frame but I really love the glow on the snow laden trees, the sun star, and pastel sky!

Stan, to answer your questions, first how reduce flare. That's easy, buy a TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II and get rid of the zooms. Secondly, the feeling of heaviness is just exactly how you should feel. The trees were heavily loaded with hoarfrost and snow. My intent was for the viewer to feel a sense of overburden.

To me winter, is "heavier" than the other seasons. Winter is cold, snow is heavy and makes us long a lighter season like spring. I love this shot as the trees with the haevy snow show you just how strong mother nature can be and gives the sense that the branches are sagging and the only way out is toward the warmer element of the sun. I think the framing of tree by using the snow covered trees was great and the added epmhasis of the sunstar gives interest to what appears to be an otherwise unremarkable sky. Personally, I think it is a clever and unique take on the typical Roan Highlands "normal" shot. Well done.

Jerry,

Nice to see you back and glad to hear things are going well for you.

This just cry's flippin' cold! But also speaks of many things besides cold. Beautifully framed, wonderful color and actually uplifting winter image.
