Oh, Colorado!

This is from the rim of the Colorado National Monument in western CO last week at sunrise. I hiked up the (closed) road a bit, then out onto the canyon rim. Was hoping some of the fog might creep into the canyon floor, but it stayed out in the valley (you can see it in the distance here at the horizon) but this was the nicest of a string of great sunrises and sunsets that i got on my long weekend trip out to Capitol Reef and Western Utah. Always nice to have such a spectacular view all to yourself!

I thought it was Oh, Canada? Seriously, that is some tremendous light and color going on there. A great thing to behold. Nice job with the blend! Not a nit, but rather a wish, for the dead tree hanging off the edge to be separated from it's surroundings a tiny bit more.

Lovely tones in the foreground snow, grand sweeping view, interesting mid-ground elements, great diagonal line from the RC anchoring shrub through 3/4 frame, and I really like the Barney Kessel improvising over a hot-Latin-beat sky! :toast:

Wow, that's quite impressive Stan. LOVE the light here. Maybe the snow in the fg is a tad too magenta. No prob about a color cast, but make it more orange to match sky and rocks...

Stan - The light is amazing here, your blending right on. My only suggestion might be to crop a little off the left to exclude the far juniper? that is largly shaded. The bright and colorful sky along with the snow patterns pull me to the far right anyway, so why not make this part of the image even more main-stage? ANother option might be to try and dodge the trees at the far left to invite the eye to wander there a bit longer. Not sure if this is possible, but with 5 exposure, maybe. A sweet shot, any way you look at it- and solitude! :toast: :toast:

yellow snow? i thought that's how you sign your photos!

glorious view, stan, in some sweet light. i agree about matching the snow to the sky, if possible. otherwise it's signing for me.

on an aside, it's always interesting to see people's comments about other photographers - or the lack of them ... it's vanishingly rare when I am out and I see another person!

Killer shot Stan, love the patches of snow in the immediate FG and the light on the horizon is great! At first I was going to suggest cropping from the left to remove that small tree that is higher than the rest, but then you would lose those beautiful shapes in the snow. Great job capturing this and I'm glad you found some solitude as well! :toast:

Stan,

What a grand scenic and gorgeous sunrise you were able to witness and capture. The comp is very strong as I like the balance between foreground, mid/background of the canyon and the glorious sky. A very well crafted image.

I'll be the contrarian as we like to do some times... I think the intense-ness of the saturation the closer you get to the sun is too strong for my tastes. I'm good with the rest of the color on the landscape and even the patch of snow considering the warm, reddish color cast one might expect from the conditions. Just my opinion - I know I wasn't there...

Holy, Stan, now that's some awesome light. The magenta cast in the snow doesn't bother me at all, and the comp is good. The oranges in the sky look clipped, and a little distracting. The area right around the sun is expected to blown, but I would tone down the sats of the rest of the orange sky to see if you can bring out some detail in those parts of the clouds.

Thanks folks!
Lon & Doug: I raised the sat a bit from my origninal website version, it looked fine on my monitor but when i looked at it at work, it looked a bit dull. So I think it's quite monitor dependent, maybe someone else will chime in on that point. Here was the version before i raised the sat another 5.
Harry: thanks, i can easily bring back some detail to those dark areas!

This is definitely some awesome light Stan and a great comp. A 5 image blend is an undertaking, and for the most part you pulled it off. Some of the cliff faces seem a bit too bright to me though. The cliff face directly behind the "spires" seems off b/c the top of the cliff is very dark, but the face itself is light? I would imagine that if the sun was rising behind this cliff it would be in extreme shadow? This would also help the spires to stand out against a darker background. The other section is the "nose" of the cliff face directly to the right of that cool gnarled tree. It also has a very dark top, but the face itself is pretty bright. It's believable that it could be getting some light, but then the tree would be brighter as well? Some work in this area may make it stand out a bit. The real star in this is that terrific warm snow/rock in the FG and that amazing sky, so think these areas I've suggested to darken/lighten will help the other areas stand out more. Just minor suggestions on an already fantastic image.

Thanks, Jared. I noticed that dark cliff top after i posted the jpeg. I dont think its a result of the blend cause theres no blending going on there, its probably just the light and rock differences, but im going to recheck the RAW to make sure--should be an easy fix if its necessary. :wavey:
