Here's another tough bird in difficult lighting, this time from Malaysia recently. Definitely the most beautiful Nuthatch that I have seen.

1D MkIV, 700mm, ISO1000, tripod, manual fill-flash.

Thanks for looking; C & C please

KC,

This is a gorgeous nuthatch species, I love the eye & orbital ring and the striking blue & black feather pattern on the wings.

Wow, what an awesome looking nuthatch. The plumage pattern in the back and that eye are just stunning. Love the overall comp.

Amazing plumage on this bird. Looks like a painting. That eye is really something. Nice capture.

What an awesome nuthatch! You had a difficult lighting situation for sure. I would prefer a little more FF to bring out the details more in the darks, but this is still a really neat shot. :toast:

I have to agree with everyone else; this is a very striking bird, and the colouration is divine. The prominent eye ring stands out well considering it's in shadow, good job on handling the tricky lighting.

What a striking nuthatch Kwan. Really like that eye and the dark head against the light background. This has a unique look to it - any out of the ordinary processing here?

Hi Ron,

Thanks for your remarks - nothing special other than having to apply Shadow/Highlight. This may have produced the "painting" effect, as Keith commented; I am not sure about this though.

I should mention that this appeared suddenly with a bird-wave. In a wave about 5 species show up together, seemingly feeding in a frenzy and moving about urgently. This is really exciting shooting because you cannot decide which bird to focus on, and they don't stay long. You hardly have time to think about EV!

Cheers,
