Black-necked Stilt from Brazoria NWR. I've added some canvas to the top - these guys jump straight up when they take off and he got a little close to the edge. This is the first time I have added canvas and I would appreciate feedback on how well it works in this case.

1D MK4, 600 mm, 1/1250 @ f 6.3, ISO 400
Manual exp., spot metered, tripod

Comments and critiques are encouraged and greatly appreciated - thanks for looking.

Randy, nice shot. Love the flight position of the bird. Great sharpness on the head and a nice exposure. I can see where you added the canvas, especially in the URHC portion. There are repeated patterns there. When adding canvas the thing to watch for most is repeated patterns. Just a suggestion. Overall a good job on the canvas, just a bit of touch up is needed.

Randy, I'm most impressed that you got color in the eye in a lift-off shot. I have trouble doing that when they're on the ground with this species. A tough exposure that looks pretty good. I like the droplets coming off of the feet too. Agree with Ron B's comment about repeated patterns in your added canvas. I like this.

The take off pose of the bird really shows off those long legs nicely. Good exposure on the blacks and whites.

Nice one Randy. I like the slightly open beak, hanging legs, and the water dripping from the feet.

Great eye - very tough to get!
Nice pose, and the water drops coming off the legs are nice.

Randy,

Love the lift off pose, the water droplets and the red you were able to show in the eye, I agree with Robn B, that can be very difficult to get with this species. Lovely natural colors, good exposure and seome nice details too. I think the additonal canvaas strengthened the comp but I would work on resolving the repeated patterns where the canvas was added.

Very, very appealing shot to me, Randy. Enough habitat and great detail on the bird where it's needed. I like the motion blur at the wingtips. The "stiletto" beak and red legs define this bird as "stylin'" !
