Black-capped Chickadee

by Howard Cheek

Gallery: AvianPosted January 31, 2011121 views15 comments
The chickadee has a short neck and large head, giving it a distinctive, rather spherical body shape. It also has a long, narrow tail and a short bill a bit thicker than a warbler’s but thinner than a finch’s.
From yesterday..
F/14, 1/640, ISO 500, 1D M3, 300mm f/2.8 + 1.4 x ext and natural mid-morning light. Clear & sunny. 85% of FF.

I like the way the perch cuts across the frame. Interesting pose from the bird. Wish he had given you a bit more headturn but what can one do. Nice background and great details.

The BG is a nice color match for the bird. I like how the beak/head are parallel to the perch.

Love the comp Howard. The larger version really shows off some nice detail and gives the viewer a better look at this bird's pose, which I like a lot. Nice BG and catchlight too.

Howard,

Love the subtle blues in the background, pose of the bird and the head angle. I might consider a little more room above the bird's head, that is just my personal taste though. Other wise I like the comp.

This works for me as presented. Simple graphic composition and understated colors always are appealing to me.

Nicely done Howard. I like your esposure and the diagonal perch. Marginally tight on top but I don't really think it's an issue with the bird looking down like it is.

Lovely image! That bugger must've been close to be losing DOF at f14!

With the bird at this angle to my lens, it would be impossible to bring that tail in..
Is that what you mean Michael?
And yes, the bird was just outside my minimum focusing range.

I love how the chickadee really stands out against the light blue sky! Great sharpness, I really like his pose, and it looks great in the larger version!
