"Quinzhee" is an Ojibwe name for a snow shelter. I threw in the snowshoes as 'decorative props'. Imaged on a very cold Minnesota January morning with a Hasselblad camera and normal lens.

I saw this on Landscape earlier and knew it would be moved here.
Who built the snow shelter and whose snowshoes Jeff? Interesting image which probably has a great story behind it.. Also many people here are interested in technical info.

Quinzhees are fun. I've built several, but never had the nerve to sleep in them (especially since they were in my front yard). I like the snow shoes, they look like it's throwing up it's arms in joy.

Reply to Eva: This Quinzhee was built by an elementary school class at the Dodge Nature Center in West St. Paul,MN. I was employed with this nature center at the time, and I 'requisitioned' the snowshoes from them. What really sticks in my mind is how COLD it was that particular morning..even without the windchill factor! Plus, I had to remove my gloves for a period of time in order to effectively operate my photo equipment..ouch!!! You fellow northern zone shutter bugs can empathsize with me no doubt.

Thanks for the background Jeff. The kids must have had a lot of fun making this structure. Even though it probably does not get as cold in souther NH as it does in MN, I can empathize with frozen fingers.

Jeff: Cool scene and a fine capture. I was hoping the larger version really was larger. The small size of your shots makes it a bit harder to evaluate. Remember that on the regular post you can go to 720 pixels on the long side and 300KB file size and to 1200 pixels/500KB on the larger version. >=))>
