This is yet another of my backyard screech owl series...this one taken at dusk. I hope you don't get sick of this bird..It gave me so many different looks and settings.

I know this is dark in places and bright in others and breaks some "rules", but for some reason I keep going back to it. I guess I feel like the funky lighting contributes to mood.

40D, 1-400mm IS, 1/80th at 5.6, slight crop all the way round

I agree - this has a compelling mood to it very appropriate to the subject.

Even though the bg is busy you still got a pretty clear shot of him here. Not a bad shot by any means! Sharon

I was lukewarm to this image when I first opened it Dan so decided to come back. I've done it several times now and it's growing on me quite a bit. Don't think it would if it wasn't an owl but since it is I think the mood here is really interesting. I didn't say that well but this one made me think. I guess that's one thing good photography is supposed to do for us , huh?

Dan, I sure had these "problems" of highlights and dark shadows when shooting a GHO in a NWR in the south Puget Sound area. How lucky to get such great light on its face. So I think I'd go for a tighter crop to cut out all the deeply shadowed areas.

Dan,

With this image and the mood it creates I feel like I am in the owl's world and I like that.

Very nice picture! I like how the owl stands out against all the green in the background. Looks really sharp too!
