Fascinating texture and contrast between the light front and the rusty brown back of what I'm guessing is a tree. I find the high contrast in the black and white region distracting.

I like it, Danny. I think the choice to blur the BG was an excellent approach overall.

Interesting. Is this manzanitta (not sure I spelled that right)? Could see burning the background some to make the blur less obvious.

Tony, yes that's a manzanita tree or shrub.

Wow - cool shot. I agree with Tony about the bg - just a shade darker to give more emphasis on the main subject.

Danny,
This is excellent. Great job with the selective focus and DOF - oops, that's the Gaussian blur DOF... . Thanks for the disclosure and I can say that it certainly works in keeping the attention on the details of this very interesting tree trunk. You didn't say, but I'm almost thinking some weathered manzanita... but could be wrong. Nice job with the processing.

Lon, If I had checked all my shots before using this one, I would have noticed one shot where the background was already nice out of focus. Again, I didn't check my work good enough which was more work in PSC4.
