Osprey on a Cold Evening

by Bill Chambers

Gallery: LandscapePosted February 11, 2011496 views38 comments
I've been in a quandry as to where to post this. I've finally decided that it's more landscape than avian, but I'm now wondering even if it should be posted at all. It's really not much of a landscape; I just liked the pretty sky and thought the Osprey looked nice against it as it surveyed it's realm on this cold evening.

Larger version also available.

D2X w/ 70-200 VR @ 170mm
1/13 @ f/11
100 ISO
No filters
Tripod
Capture One 6, CS4, TK's sharpening

Critiques, suggestions, and comments always welcomed and greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking and sharing.

Nice transition of color, and a great capture with the natural characteristics of the tree

I really like the beautiful background in this, and it strikes me as more of a landscape image than anything else. Very nice framing.

I like it Bill and it is definitely worth a post, no matter if it is here or in Avian. The sky colors are awesome and I like the sense of scale and the shapes of the tree. Somehow I feel that the trees in the BG do not add much with them being cut by the bottom of the frame the way they are and feel the image would be stronger without them.

It's simple and elegant Bill. I had some doubts with the other trees in the BG - was thinking this would even be better with just the tree in the FG with all the graphic appeal. But the BG trees kind of mimic the FG tree - so at the end, I think it works. And probably a comp with just the FG tree with that sky as a backdrop was not even possible

Very elegant and a gorgeous moment Bill. The colour gradient in the sky is awesome and the detail rendered in the trees is perfect. Well done and thanks for posting it in Landscape Gallery. Cheers

Bill,

Very cool shot. I love that in spite of teh distancxe you can clearly identify the bird as an Osprey. I love scenes like this as opposed to the close up portraits we often see. :toast:

I love this one Bill! Beautiful warm tones, well composed and the osprey surveying his domain really adds to it.

I'm glad you posted it here, because in Avian, I'd never had seen it. I even like it with the bird taken out. Nice work.

Thanks all for your comments. I'm actually surprised at the comments. While I loved the sky color, the intruding BG trees really bothered me (still bother me). I considered trying to clone them, but thought it would be a bit much to clone. Thanks again.

Beautiful shot! No cloning needed here, IMO. The osprey while small, makes such a profound impact on the image's over all impact. I really like images that accomplish that without a big in your face subject.

This is fantastic, Bill. The color is gorgeous, and I love the trees. All the trees. The trees give a wonderful graphic appeal to your image yet do not detract at all from the osprey in my opinion. A superb image that I am pleased you decided to post.

Excellent Bill! The sky and the branches make the image. The Osprey of course is a great addition and definitely enhances the image, but it is strongly composed to begin with.
