The Enchantments
by Jason Kim
This is from my backpack trip to The Enchantments, last October. I arrived a few days past peak, and most of the larches were already turning brown or had lost their needles. There were still pockets to be found, though. Without a doubt, this area of Washington is the most photogenic mountain environment that I have ever had the pleasure of visiting.
I joined NPN in 2006 and quickly fell victim to a malady my wife calls "larch fever." The stunning images by NPN members Adam Gibbs and Zack Schnepf, among others, ignited a serious desire to spend some time in this wilderness area. Living in San Diego, and considering its rigorous permit system, it isn't terribly easy getting into The Enchantments. In 2009, I made it to the slabs below Lake Vivianne and turned around due to snow and being ill-equipped for such conditions. Last year, I finally made it and had a wonderful time. Still, I am not quite cured of my sickness... Larches at their peak, under fresh snow... hopefully next year!
Thanks for looking and any comments.
