I took this picture near the end of summer in Waterton Lakes National Park. Usually the light isn't on our side, but we finally found some bucks in good light. I really like this picture because he really stands out and the lighting is pretty good.

I haven't figured out what kind of bushes this buck is in, so if you know it would be appreciated.

Hey Jenaya,

Well, that's quite the natural frame around that buck! Although hard to tell for sure in this shot, to me the bushes look like Buffaloberry (Shepherdia canadensis) which I know is quite common where you live. Two further comments on the image - to my eye the whites on the top of the snout look just a [i]tad[/i/ blown out. If the image were mine (and if you captured this in raw format) I'd try to tone that back just a bit. Second, I think the image might be just a little stronger if you cropped a little off the bottom (I find the out of focus leaves/bushes there a little distracting and don't think they add to the image). But overall my nits are pretty minor and you do have an appealing and quite unique deer shot here (which isn't too easy to do given the large number of deer images out there!).

Cheers...thanks for sharing this...

Brad

Hi again and thank you for the comments and suggestions, Brad! I made the changes you suggested...or at least as best as I could. I hope this version is a little better! We also toned down the contrast and sharpening a little.

I'm not sure how to (or if I can) post a larger version of the corrected file?

Thank you again...everyone's comments are really helping me improve my photography and processing techniques!

Hi Jenaya. I think this is wonderful! The light is a bit on the harsh side, but you managed it well. The snout does not look blown out on my calibrated monitor and I certainly prefer the original post over the repost!!! In the repost you seem to have toned down the entire image, which made it look darker and duller. Also there appears to be a color shift and I prefer the color in the original. I think what Brad was suggesting was to tone down only the bright areas on the snout selectively.

Jenaya, search google images for chokecherry.

Fine capture. I agree the first capture is closest to correct. If those whites are blown, it is just a very slight amount! The pose, with his head popping up from the bushes is excellent!
