This is another image from the cactus garden of two Golden Barrel cacti.

I like this image because of the late afternoon light, the details on the foreground larger cacti and because to my mind's eye the cacti look as though they are revolving in different directions.

This was taken with a Leica Dlux-4 P&S, spot metering, handheld, f/3.5, ISO 80, 1/500s, -.67 EV and most likely Aperture mode.

The Purchase Print option shows a vertical view and has a totally different feel to it.

If you have a preference between the vertical and horizontal versions, would love to hear your opinion.

In the interim, still focusing on unpacking; about 2/3rds done, and of course this next week, brings taxes into focus.

Hi to all...

Terrific image, Carol. I love the lighting particularly on the second cactus. The comp is well done and emphasizes the spines, or whatever they are called, very well. I just bought a small cactus at a local nursery last week....makes for a very interesting subject.

My only suggestion, if possible, would be to darken the background to black particularly in the LRC.

Carol: Nice find and wonderful light. I agree with darkening the RLC and I would have liked the entire small cactus in the frame. For me this comp works better than the vertical but I think I would give the vertical the nod if the camera was aimed more to the right and had more of the small cactus showing.>=))>

Carol,

Barrel cacti are my favorite of the cactus family and this image certainly does the variety justice, and your left to right movement through your image with your comp, will be mirrored in my next post. Thanks Carol.

I like the echo and the balance of strong light on the front one and more subtle light on the back one. Superb work.

Interesting POV Carol. Like the other commnets, a little more darkening in the LRC.

I agree with all the suggestions made to this point. There is also something funky going on with the underside of the larger barrel cactus. Perhaps darkening would cure it. It might also cure the specular highlights.

Love the comp, the light and the texture Carol.

Surprisingly given all my black bgs, I like the lighter right corner in this. If I were to do anything I might lighten the dark space at the top, if there's any detail to be had there.

I like both of these but prefer the echoing shape in the main post. I like the image.

Love the design of the cactus in the foreground and how you have mirrored that with the smaller cactus in the background. I like the horizontal composition better but, as others pointed out, I would be inclined to darken the lower right corner somewhat. Nicely done.

This is just wonderful, Carol ! I can't help thinking of a planet and moon ( a very prickly planet and moon, it must be said !! ) wheeling through the darkness. Can't get the vertical image at the moment, but the horizontal certainly works well for me.
