Acorn Woodpecker Again

by Harry Harris

This is another shot of the Acorn Woodpecker I captured. I like this one because it shows the storage of the acorns. I read about this behavior and now I have my own evidence of it. I again cropped a lot (to 30% of FF) to enlarge the bird and show the acorns.

Comments are appreciated.

Harry,

What an interesting image. I love all the pockets of acorns being stored. You got a very nice profile view of the bird with a great composition. I got your message from my post about processing. Let's talk. I need help. Oh, your title is misspelled. Thought you'd want to fix it. :toast:

I guess I need to work on my typing as well as my photography. I cannot find a way to edit the title. Could someone tell me the size of my posts here so I can make sure I am doing it correctly.

Thanks Rich for the how and David for the heads up. The behavior is amazing, they have to find a hole that is just right for the acorn they have. Too loose and it will fall out; too tight and the acron will crack and spoil. They even have to maintain the cache, so as the acorns dry and shrink they have to move them.

Very nice image. I think seeing all of the acorns is a real plus for the image.

When I first looked at the thumbnail, I thought I the woodpecker might be a little lost on the tree. After clicking on it, and also seeing the large version, you got it exactly right. That is pretty neat to see all those acorns stuck in there......nicely done!

Excellent...love the composition. Works really well with this species to show them on their tree.
