West Thumb Morning

Sorry I have not been active for over a month - been busy and trying to catch up on some processing

I spent a week in Yellowstone last month with 3 other photogs, where we chartered a snow coach for a few days to take us around the park. This particular morning we headed to West Thumb. The sky was clear, so we were expecting a boring sunrise. However, the geyser basin had it's own micro climate going on and the cold brought a ton of steam over the area. As the sun came up and filtered through the steam, it provided a few minutes of very interesting light.

On the left edge, you can see part of the boardwalk - I elected not to clone it out, as I don't find it overly distracting. C&C appreciated and a B&W version is posted below.

Canon 5DII. 24-105. ISO 100. f/13. 1/125 sec. See LARGER VERSION for best detail

Wonderful conditions Doug and the light, as you mention is great. I like both versions but think I prefer the B&W one.

This is a beautiful picture, very specific atmosphere. I think I would prefer the color version, as the delicate shades of the trees add a lot. Anyway, the b&w is well done, fine processing, the details of the twigs appear more clearly, even in the small version. I like your shot very much.

Doug, This is beautiful. You ended up with great conditions from the micro climate. In the smaller versions I really like the b/w. Your processing looks fantastic to me. The large color version is just wonderful, more like awesome! Great work.

I much prefer the color version. To me it highlights the hoar frost on the trees and warms the picture.

Gorgeous and ethereal Doug. I prefer the B&W version for it's more mystical and ethereal mood..

Really great Doug. The B&W better than the color I think. The fog gives this such a small scene feels although it's not really that intimate.

Doug, both are great in their own right - but if pushed, I guess I prefer the B&W.
Wonderful lines and textures, and nice comp.
