Egretta thula

This was taken on the Gulf coast of Florida, the egret had been hunting in the shallow waves when it lifted up and flew right towards me.

D200, f6.3, pretty sure I was laying in the sand, handheld, f6.3, 1/1500, ISO 200, 80-400mm VR at 175mm, natural light, not baited or set up. Cropped vertical from a horizontal presentation, rotation adjustment, sharpening for web. Larger version provided.

As always I appreciate your thought comments and critiques. Thank you for looking.

Mia, I like the head on approach of the image. The vertical crop really sets up the feeling of approach. The depth of field with the blurred wing tips gives me the feeling of motion. I like it.

I like the position of the wings and the overall pose from the egret. You always do a nice job in handling and bringing out detail in white colored birds, something I have difficulty with, good timing in getting this, well done.

Wow great shot Mia. I love the position of the wings and those feet are great. There seems to be a couple of dust spots you might want to get rid of, one just left of the legs and one right next to the right leg.

I agree with all the above Mia - hard to see how you could have got this any better - wings and feet just make it, not to mention both eyes looking ahead and the whole of the bird is beneath the horizon which is another plus!

Mia, this is really nice. The exposure is perfect and I like the fact that we can see both eyes. The little bit of wing blur gives a sense of motion. Well done!!

Excellent choice of framing this one, Mia. Great timing. I'll be sharing a few from my recent trip to Ft Desoto as soon as I get my feet on the ground.

perfect exposure as usual - great pose , nice water and I really like the horizon and bit of waves. Really adds a bit of interest without detracting from the egret.

Beautifully timed and controlled capture Mia, especially if you were laying in the sand, very well done indeed :^)

What I'd give for a subject like this to one time, just one time, fly in my direction ...... LOL ;^p

If I may, I'd like to ask you a question: Were you using aperture or shutter priority, of fully manual for this shot?

Thanks in advance and wishing you all the best :^)

Mia, as usual, excellent detail, exposure and choice for DOF. I also really like this pose...coming at the viewer with legs extended and hanging...very cool! My only small thing (and this might very well be my monitor since I am on my work machine right now), but seems like a bit of a green cast to it....I mostly see it in the yellow feet. But again, could just be my monitor.

One of your signature shots: whites exactly right, perfect detail, perfect timing and lovely early light. What makes the shot for me is that the bird is at an angle to the frame, contrasting with the horizon and wavelets. If it were mine, though, I might trim off the bottom half inch. The reflection is so partial I think it is a distraction.

Love that head on look. Nice exposure work, Mia. It amazes me how big the Snowy's feet are, way big for a small bird.
