European elk fighting is spectacular, especially from a distance not more then 30 feet. When the first elk came out of the forest my first thoughts were...wow, she's large!!! But when the mother came out, the first one appeared to be a fawn  They are huge!!!
And good fun.

iso 200 1/640 sec. f/4 full frame

I am glad that it is another elk and not me standing on the receiving end of that hoof. Nice action image. You captured the look on the elks face very well.

Super capture Edwin - I love the timing and sense of power - but also the trees in the b/g really add something - there is a real sense of a stage but without being at all distracting from the main action.

Great action with those kicking legs and the flying snow Edwin. I do find it a pity that the 'receiver' is turning away; IMO this would be so much stronger if her head were visible, but I realise very well that you had no control over that. I would further try to reduce the brightness of some of the vertical bright lines in the BG.

Superb action image, Edwin, with hooves and snow flying in all directions and the determined look on the elk's face. :toast:

For me this shot is about the action and your short story. The framing doesn't really work for me though, but I guess you were sort of surprised by the sudden action?

Thanks all :wavey:

It was a suprise indeed Marsel. When this happens with the 500mm attached you make the best of it. Of course it could be so much better when the other one was hit in the face or with less tight framing - couldn't agree more but this is it I'm afraid

Hi Edwin,

Great timing and the positioning of the two hooves makes the shot even more compelling - reminds me so much of two prizefighters plying their craft. The flying snow adds a nice little touch as well. While I agree with Vincent's comments, in situations like this you simply need to accept what you are given and make the most of it, which I believe you have. If the image were mine I might play a little more with the balance of the exposure - perhaps toning down the illuminated trees in the background just a tad and perhaps pulling out just a little more shadow detail from the main subject (but too much more on this and it would look artificial).

Well done...

Great action shot. I thought they were moose when I first looked at the image.

Thanks Brad!!

@Carl..these are moose but that name is given by the indians if I'm not mistaking. In Europe we call them Eurasian elk. But it's the same animal (Alces alces).

Nice capture, I like the motion in the image, especially with the snow flying off the hoof. Are European Elk relatives of the North American Moose? I saw a post about 7 photos earlier of a Moose trio and they look very similar.

Edit: I googled it, yes they are pretty much the same.

All essential elements are here for this image. The bits of flying snow is a plus.
