Sierra Frosting
by Harry Lichtman
Just returned from a week of cross country skiing in the Mammouth Lakes area of CA, and my 1st intro to the Sierra. While there was plenty of snow while I was there, most of it was traveling sideways at 30 MPH so my thoughts of fresh snow on trees were blown out the window. Days were spent skiing, but early mornings I headed toward Bishop to check out the photo possibilities there. I had planned a backback from the area 2 yrs earlier but had to can it after a back injury, so I was eager to see what I missed. I decided to spend most of my time investigating the braided Owens River with the finite time that I had. I spent sunrise around the river, then walked the river's edge thereafter each morning looking for possible comps for the next morning.
I was surprised to find the variety of colors of the sage and brush around the river, especially in winter. Given the braiding of the river, I though it would be much easier to find comps with unobstructed views of the Sierra without brush or telephone poles blocking the view. Not as easy as I thought. I must have walked a good portion of the southern and northern ends of the river. While I didn't get any of the blazing skies while I was there, there was a peacefulness and beauty to the valley that kept me coming back each morning.
Canon 5D MII, Canon 24-105 L, f16, partial polarizing filter, 2 stop grad ND filter hard edge.
I used the daylight WB and warmed it slightly in processing - wanted to convey the frost on the foliage that AM.

36 commentsi like the light on the mountains and reflection in water good comp.
I love the East Side! Since I live on the west side, getting over there in winter is something of an epic. I'm glad you were able to spend some quality time wandering around over there.

River makes a great leading line.
Great light angle.
Subtle colors of light green and reds in the foliage add color-contrast.
The silhouetted tree is the "cherry on top".
As you know already, excellent photo and comp.

Preston - I think the sky variation you see is a coombination of the polarizer (used minimally to prevent great variation but enough to add the contrast to sky and mnt.) and areas of high clouds and areas where there were no clouds. I look forward to seeing more of your side of the range as well.
I like it all, but it’s just a bit too blue for my taste.
Love the tone

Give me holler if you're ever over this way.

A beautiful and compelling scene from the East side and the Owen's Valley. I love the comp and the early light striking the range is gorgeous. Great reflection and motion in the river as well.
As far as the color goes, I think the repost is a great improvement and thanks for taking the time and incorporating the suggestions. Maybe I'm just color sensitive, but I still think this could go a little further with the blue and cyan. I think the mountain range looks great, but is leaning blue - which is ok and of course a personal choice. The brush and shoreline are still quite strong in the cyan IMHO; I just dont' see any green or yellow here.
Don't get me wrong Harry, this is a beautiful image and we're all open to interpretation of color. And you also nailed it when you said looking at our own images too long can be an issue - I know it is for me.
I love the image - just think the color is slightly off.
