McDowell Mtn Sunrise

Taken this morning in NE Phoenix. I've been waiting for months for the sun to rise near this location (rises further south through fall and winter). Man, the sun rises fast down here, I had about 20 seconds to get the few exposures taken before it popped up TOO high, lol.

Comments appreciated... to me the sun feels a little too centered, but panning right wasn't pretty, mostly bare and rocky. The cholla grew where they grew, so I had to make the best of it. I now realize that I focused a wee bit too far into the middle ground, because the closest cholla isn't popping. For those of us who need reading glasses, it's fairly accurate having the first 24" blurry!

Technicals: Four exposures mooshed together with Photomatix to control the WIDE luminance range (then adjusted it as best as I could to get rid of the HDR look). Then basical Curves, Saturation, Levels and USM for input sharpening of course. For output I did the Adamus sharpening technique.

5DM2, 16-35mm @25mm, f/14, ISO 100, AWB (warmed it up a bit in RAW but kept it a little dark on purpose)

The backlight cholla look amazing - you did a great job of controlling the highlights. The right cholla looks a little blurred compared to the others - maybe just my eyes and the small version. The composition and spacing work well too. :toast:

I echo Harry's comments Paul. The back lit chollas are absolutely beautiful. I have the 16-35 and it does produce amazing sun stars as witnessed here. I like the comp as is with my reading glasses on! Beautiful capture!

I just love when the light hits cholla, so well portrayed here! Nice looking sunburst as well. I do wish the tall cactus wasn't fighting with the sunburst for attention.

I think it would look great cropped to a square starting at the top left corner and ending halfway through that headless chicken near the center cholla.

Cool shot. Good planning.

ROFL!! I just noticed that as soon as you said it! It truly looks like a headless chicken right out of a Tom & Jerry cartoon, hilarious. Guess I'll be revisiting THIS spot, because now that Justin mentioned it, the cactus is bugging me a bit too. But I appreciate all the encouraging comments... I think I have a good location to work with, just need to look around in the viewfinder a bit better. This is one of the reasons why we post these shots, the critiques are the most helpful thing to me.

Very nice image Paul. I The sunstar is perfect for this scene and I like how the back lighting makes the cholla glow. I might consider trying to remove some of the cyan from the right part of the sky. I like the color of the sky around the sunstar much better.

Superb rimlighting here Paul, really captures the eye. The sunstar looks perfect too, and while it's slightly centered I think as you tell it you did not have a whole lot of other options. Lovely image! :toast:

The light on the chollas is great. Just as the sunstar. And you did a great job not to overdo the hdr look. :toast:

Thanks all, I sure appreciate the feedback. I do see some rookie mistakes as I examine it closer, lol. The location is only 15 minutes from where I work so I'll surely head back there and give it another go.

Aside from the minor nits you already mentioned, I like this one Paul. It conveys a warmth to it that actually makes me feel the warmth of the first rays of sun, and the backlit cholla is terrific. I don't mind the centered sunstar, but that tall cactus is a tiny distraction. Also a great example of using HDR SW with success, which I rarely see, so kudos there as well!

The whole approach is just a perfect match to the wonderful result you got, Paul. I love the color, the light and composition. Probably would have like some different arrangement of chollas, but they "they grow where they grow". And you got that right: it doesn't look HDR ... in a good way!

Beautiful shot Paul. What really impresses me here is the great clarity and the crispness of the sunstar. The backlit chollas are a delight as well. This looks like a great area to wander through; I see so many nice intimate compositions just in the immediate FG. Well done.

Thanks again all. There are a few boo-boos, but I'm happy with the light.

BTW, there's a certain set that like to claim that smartphones take really good images, and in diffused light with a 2-stop range that may be so. But above you'll see what an iPhone 4 can do in intense light... took this about 90 seconds before the sun popped up. Not sure I can see a quality difference from my original post.

Very nice image Paul. Since you mentioned going back to recompose, I won't touch on that. My nit is about the color: I think there may be too much green. I understand the chollas are green to begin with, but they just seem too green to me. Part of it may be the saturation, which may be just overwhelming the green in the chollas, and also the yellow in the rest of the picture. However, I think this scene and lighting situation is incredibly, and you have done a good job bringing out the drama and emotion of it all. Your HDR work is phenomenal and allows the image to seem true to life. I look forward to seeing a recomposed image from this locality!

Well of COURSE it's too green Jake, didn't I mention that this was my Saint Paddy's Day tribute image??

I see what you mean, I'll revisit it and do some tweaking. In a way I like the warmth in the same sense as using a colored filter to make a scene heavy in one color, but my goal was certainly to show an image of the scene before me. I'll dink and see what happens, and I'll keep this in mind when I head back there (i'll avoid the headless chicken in the center FG, lol). I appreciate the input!
