The Warning

This was shot on our last Kenya tour around sunrise. We found a pride of lions with three cubs when it was still dark, and decided to stay and wait to see what would happen. Usually, when there are young animals around, it's worth to be patient because often things will happen.

Here one of the most playful cubs was irritating it's mom - she suddenly got up and made a move towards the cub. Nothing much, but it was enough for the cub to quickly take a few small steps backwards. I like the 'I won't do it again mom!' look.

I too love the look on that small face. The dust cloud adds immensely to the feeling of the interaction between the mom and cub. The light is fantastic. Is this full frame? Did you shoot any that included all of mom? If so, would like to see if that distracts attention or adds to the interaction.

The look in the eyes of the cub is unbelievable Marsel - reminds me of young Simba in that Cheesy Disney movie. I also like how the dust came out - awesome stuff - one of your best.

Superb expression and posture of the cub! I like how the mother is included here so you can see what makes the cub react, but I am wondering how it would look without her? :wavey:

The look of the cub says it all, wonderful timing to get this and I like that you see some of the mom to add to the story, excellent shot, well done.

The look says it all. The dust adds the sense of something happening now. Well done.

The expression, as you say, has been excellently captured. I also like the way you have included part of the mother, although it would have been better if she had shown more of her face. On the other hand, if she had shown more of her face, we would, in all probability, have had less of the cub's face!

very nice Marsel! I love the crisp detail of the cub's eye, as well as its look.
the dust enhances this and mom's head is just enough in the frame to tell the story.

the light is to die for!

Tremendous behavoural shot, the inclusion of just a bit of Mum certainly adds to the image.

Lion Cubs are such fun to watch and if you are lucky catch some action. :toast: :toast:

Great to have the complete storyline although the eyes and expression on the cub's face really says it all ;^) Brilliantly exposed and fantastic detail on the cub, which immediately draws one's attention to where it's meant to be. In short, I love this image Marsel and can hardly wait to see what you'll post up next :^)

The cub has certainly been told and you can see that very clearly in your shot Marsel, cracking shot and I love the eyes on the little lion cub.

Hi Marsel,

As always, a compelling image. The eyes of that cub - along with the dust - really make the shot for me. I totally understand the need to include the mother's head in the shot to make the visual story work, but I'm not 100% sure the crop is optimal for my taste (but, of course, this is always impossible to fully judge without seeing the full-framed original). I'm thinking that perhaps showing slightly MORE of the mother (looks a little too guillotined for me), and slightly less on the right side of the frame, might appeal to me more (but that's very theoretical!).

Cheers...thanks for sharing this...

Thank you for your comments and feedback - much appreciated.

I'm not 100% sure the crop is optimal

I am - it isn't, for exactly the reasons you mentioned. I cropped from the top and right, nothing from the left; this is, unfortunately, all there is.

I'm glad we can still agree on some things.

There's so much to see and read in this image. The big picture where mom scolds is further enhanced by the very attentive eye of the cub, the dust and posture. Like this a lot.

Beautiful light, dust cloud and expression. The inclusion of the female tells the story, but I kept going back and forth in my mind wondering if it would be better with just the cub. Your techs are wonderful, as we have come to expect.

Hi Marsel, the plums of dust, the cowering look from the cub, all tells the story. I would agree that to have some more of the lioness in view (showing some posture/stance) would have added to the overall comp and drama, but hey, trying to cover everything might have meant you missed the shot.

Fantastic depiction of the communication between mother and cub. Love the look on the cubs face which reminds me of any youngster who knows that the envelope is being pushed a little too much. Congratulations on this magnificent photo. Best regards, Andrei :toast:

I love the look of the cubs eyes! Having the dust cloud in there is really cool because it shows what happened. Great detail in the fur, and there's even some catchlight in the cubs eye! Amazing image!
