Jewel of the Jungle

Here's another one from St. Croix in the Virgin Islands.

This year's rainy season here was the rainest in almost 100 years. We're talkin' Biblical stuff. As such, last December offered a rare chance to photograph waterfalls in never-before-seen condition. I found many to choose from, but this one was the best of all.

I've shot a lot in both Hawaii and the Columbia River Gorge, both top-notch waterfall locales, but this one held it's own with anything I've seen in those areas. This waterfall is so rarely seen here that it doesn't even have a name. I've shown prints of this to people who've lived here their whole lives, and at first they think I'm joking when I tell them that this exists right here on St. Croix.

I would've liked to get a tad more texture in the water, but it was getting dark and I didn't want to risk waiting to shoot this fleeting gem on another day. Thus, the long shutter speed and creamy water (which many buyers actually seem to prefer).

5DMK2, 16mm, f/16, 6 seconds, ISO 100, polarizer

Fantastic! Great composition, appealing colours, and well done all around. The only slight nit I have would be that I'd have liked a somewhat faster shutter speed to retain a little more detail in the waterfall, but I cannot stress enough how minor of a nit it is.

A lovely image - especially like the layers of rocks.
Pleasing colors overall, but the greens on the lower rocks seem over-saturated and unnatural.

I really like this one Kory. The foreground and background waterfalls compliment each other very nicely.

Nice comp, and amazing unusual coloration. Is that algae, or mineralization? I assume algae, but it's so localized in some of those rocks. Nice!

Beautiful shot. The greens on the fg rocks DO SEEM over done but I see some real neon out there ocassionally. Regardless, I really like this image, I think the comp is outstanding. :toast:

What an idyllic spot! I love all the waterfalls leading into the background, and the mossy rock in the foreground makes for a great anchor.

I really like the softness of this image, nice placement of the FG rock as well.

Thanks all. Those greens on the foreground rocks really were just as you see them. I have no idea what they are, but I can tell you they're not lichens or growth or anything. The rocks themselves seemed to be stained that color.

I like your composition. The greens on the lower rocks seems to be over saturated...they also look unnatural. This is a very idylic spot. Beautiful scene

Very nice shot and excellent composition. The foreground rock really provides a nice visual anchor. I'll take your word for it on those greens . . . they seem unusual, but at the same time it didn't immediately strike me as oversaturation. Just a different sort of green than I'm used to seeing. And they are actually quite attractive.

Layers are wonderful! I can't decide RE the lower central boulder. you can't do much about it, but it would have been nice to not have it there.

Nothing like unique conditions to bring out the best in a place. Nice take. Watch the branches on the right side as they are a bit distracting but love the light and green on the rocks :)

I guess I'm one of those who likes the softer effect of the long shutter. At lease I like this one as is. Love the stacked falls. My only comment is that with the word "jungle" in the title, there's an aweful lot of rock and not much green stuff...

I love the colour palette here, as well as the repeating cascades. Water blur is just right for my tastes...

Very nice job Kory! :toast:

I might be tempted to reduce the green saturation a tad. Just a tad...
