Taken on the beach in front of the B&B where we stayed in the Catlins on the South Island of New Zealand. It really wasn't all that colorful of a sunrise but the sriking contrast of the green seaweed and geometry of the rocks were compelling.

Nikon D200 ,Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Zoom
3s f/22.0 at 35.0mm iso100
NDG and 3 stop ND filters

Love the seaweed. I'm thinking you could crop out most of the sky and increase the emphasis on the fg. The seaweed and the reflected colors from the sky in the bg water would make a lovely composition on their own. Just a thought.

love the colours and depth here Dan...I agree the foreground could be stronger, perhaps composing closer to that green patch of moss/algae with it much more prominent in-frame would have enhanced the foreground appeal?

Thanks for the comments. Yes the seaweed is what made me stop in this spot to take the photo. This was one of my first attempts at using wider angle lens and composing this sort of landscape. It is suprisingly difficult to change one's thinking after years of wildlife, florals, etc. always aimed at close up/isolation. I appreciate the feedback. No chance to do another take (9k miles away?) but I will try some different crops as a learning for future reference.

I've got a completely different image from farther down the beach that I will post when my time limit expires

Dan - for my taste, if you were to crop the f/g so you start with the seaweed and just take a tiny bit off the sky (losing the small brighter stip of cloud top right) to give yourself a square crop - then this would really work very well - there's a lot here that is lovely but at the moment it is hard to focus in on what is best - I think this crop might just do it?

Much stronger now Dan for my taste - though you seem to have lost a bit off the RH side which I think is a shame - I might also take a little more off the bottom though I'd need to try a few things to be sure - but it definitely has much more focus now.
