Chisos Mountains

by Bill Chambers

Gallery: LandscapePosted April 14, 2011350 views18 comments
An older image I just came across and never posted. This is the Chisos Mountain Range within Big Bend National Park. This was taken over New Year's Eve weekend 2006. There was a nice snowstorm the night before and it added such a nice contrast to the desert floor.

PLEASE VIEW THIS LARGE TO APPRECIATE ANY DETAIL. THE SMALL VERSION JUST DOESN'T DO IT JUSTICE.

D2x w/ Tokina ATX 12-24 @ 22mm
1/30 @ f/11 - MLU and mc-30 remote release
100 ISO
No filters
Tripod
Capture One 4, CS4, TK's actions

Critiques, suggestions, and comments always welcomed and greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for looking and sharing.

Wow, Bill -- Snow is not something I have come to associate with your work (although I have mistaken your beach sands for snow drifts in thumbnails in past winters  ). I agree, the snow in this shot transforms it into something very special. I know many people viewing this site are not fond of plain skies, but I think dramatic clouds would detract from the atmosphere of this image. I can feel the coolness of the scene here as I marvel at the intricate details of the vegetation and the mountains.

Not your usual fare, but still beautifully done Bill. The fresh layering of snow really sets this desert scene off. I am glad you revisited this one.

This place is near the top of my to-do list Bill. The Chisos Mountains are the only contiguous mountain chain completely inside of one national park in the United States. The wet conditions and visually stimulating foreground create a nice, painterly look. The only drawback I see here is the amount of sky included in the image, although I really don't have suggestions to offer on that one. Still, a beautiful piece of art.

Snow in a Chambers image?? Shocking...
Looks good, Bill. I was there last March and unfortunately it was extremely dry and clear. That one yucca(?) on the rhs is a minor distraction but i really like this overall.

Nice one, Bill. You caught the moment and mood with this comp.
I especially like what looks like a yellow bloom in the left of the frame.

Your touch with creating amazing color in your images never ceases to amaze me, Bill. Great soft light and fantastic detail through out the frame. The large version really rocks. Maybe a tough more contrast in the fg to deepen the shadows?

Great image, Bill. Brings back fond memories of my 2 trips there in the early 90's. This shows off wonderfully the variety of landscapes.

Wow, this is so unusual a combo to see. Different for you to be sure, and uncommon in general too. I love the contrast created by the conditions here. Excellent!

Beautiful scene, Bill. I have been wanting to get out to Big Bend for quite a while now. As an aside, I just finished reading "All the Pretty Horses" from Cormac McCarthy and really enjoyed his description of the wild Texas/Mexico landscape. If by chance you have not read that one I reccommend it.
