She is actually not angry with me, but at one of her cubs. The glance was just passing by and I think I managed to trigger at the right moment.

This is a busy scene with all the grass everywhere. Does it work anyway, or is there anything I could have done/could do about it?
This was cropped a bit so there is room to maneuver the composition.
The oof branch in the lower left is bugging me, but I don't know what to do about it. Any suggestions?

Critiques and comments highly appreciated.

Masai Mara.

Although there is a lot of grass blocking the lions (to be expected as far as I'm concerned), you've got a nice view of the eye of the lioness and enough of a view of the cubs to show they're being chastised to make this work. I didn't really notice the OOF branch until I read your comment. If you do want to deal with it you could crop a little more off the bottom or use the healing brush or cloning tool if using PS.

Hi Johan. Pretty cool just getting three of these amazing creatures in one frame. As for the grasses and partially obscurred face, as they say, "it is what it is" and don't think you can do much to alter it, reasonably. In the field if you were positioned a little to the right it would have revealed mom's face a bit more. I just need to "get" to Masai Mara, someday.

I think the crop works well enough as is Johan, I like the fact that you have caught one of mum's eyes completely in the clear :^)

Had a great time on the Mara back in 2006, so I can well relate to the sense of thrill you must have had with this encounter :^)

Triggered at the right moment indeed Johan, she sure looks very pissed off with you! The snarl makes this a strong photo and the presence of the cubs translates the snarl into one of a protective mother. The grasses and that OOF branch are a distraction to me too and the best solution would have been to move a bit to the right, which would have given you a clearer view of the lioness(but less of the cubs). This is always difficult in the field as subjects can obviously move around. I suppose if you are skilled enough with the clone tool you could make that OOF branch 'disappear', but it won't be an easy task.

Excellent encounter! Yes, too bad about the oof grasses and I especially would wish to not have the grasses in front of the snarling mouth. In these kinds of situations much of that is beyond your control.

I like the fierce look and the habitat is a bonus that is not often seen with Lion images
