Another Ladybird...
by Matt Cole
A style of photography that I've always found appealing is high magnification macro images taken in natural light (or mixed natural light and flash). The vast majority of high magnification images (i.e. beyond 1x) are taken fully with flash because this freezes movement blur and allows images to be taken handheld - far more practical when you're working with DOF of 1mm or less which makes it almost impossible to get tripods in position. As soon as you incorporate natural light you have to shoot in a different way which is quite a challenge and explains the lack of images that you see in this style.
Anyway, here's a recent image of a Ladybird on the back of a daffodil taken using a mixture of flash and natural light. Admittedly this one isn't particularly high magnification, probably about 1.5x (on a full frame body).
Canon 5D with MP-E 65mm macro lens and diffused MT-24 flash unit. F11, 1/200, ISO 400.

12 commentsI,ve been messing myself with this method lately using a jessops "speedlight" alternative which has a nice bounce /diffuser on it.
When you think how tricky it used to be on film cameras !
