Here's my second attempt at the best Brown Pelican photo ever. (Note: it may take more than two attempts.)

Real hard to tell on an image this small (posting a larger version would be helpful!) so I could be wrong, but the focus seems to be zeroed in more on the neck than the head or the eye. The things I like most about this image are the angle of view, the spread of the wings, and what appears to be the makings of a catchlight in the subject's eye :^)
If you happen to be working with Photoshop, I think it might be worth experimenting with Shadows and Highlights to lighten up more of the Pelican, if not the whole image.
A third attempt might indeed work a charm, but as you suggest Matthew, it might need a few more than that ;^) All the same, I think you're definitely on the right track. Looking forward to seeing more as and when :^)

Great angle of light for emphasizing the bird's head and neck against the dark bg and the wing position is also nice. Overall the image is too dark for me and the eye appears a bit soft. If this is only your second attempt you're doing great, just keep pushing the shutter button and you'll get it.

Matthew, I love your comment. :) It would be easier to evaluate this with a larger version. I really like the light on the bird.

Great light and wing position and I like the bg, Matthew. The Pelican looks just a little soft to my eye.

Matthew,
Yes the focus is not perfect, but still a nice shot!
Love the light!
