Came across this on a pic request the other day. Was reminded because I,ve found three in nest boxes like this this year.
This is the early queen nest which has the first two or three eggs in it.
Taken in 1971
Pentax Spotmatic and Ecktachrome 100 ASA film.
Thats all I can remember !

What a great shot John! Beautiful colors and detail. I love the story in the photo... the nest makes this so much more than just another bug shot. Really nice!

Great details in both the hornet and the nest. I'll bet this wasn't taken with a 60mm lens and a working distance of 3 inches.
