Dead Horse Point

I have wanted to visit Dead Horse Point State Park since the first time I saw a photo of the place and finally had time to stop by when I was in Moab for the RMNP Forum Spring Fling get-together. In viewing many photos of this location, I never noticed the really prominent road that meanders through the canyon. Once I actually got there and saw the road, I decided to focus on other views instead. This particular morning brought clear skies and a beautiful pastel glow along the horizon.

I am trying to improve my photography, so I welcome all critiques and comments.

5D2, 70-200 lens @ 98mm, 0.6 sec. Single exposure.

I think this works very well. You have some real nice, soft light on the cliffs in the foreground and in the very distance, and the pastels are very pleasing.

The pastel colors are wonderful here Sarah. I also like the mix of warm and cool tones. Beautiful, different, and enjoyable.

Very nice layers and light, Sarah. I really like the sense of depth created by the blue haze.

Wonderful pastels - they work really well for such a scene. The only thing I notice is that the composition is a bit more "open" on the right, while "closed" on the left. This makes the eye drift towards the right and out of the frame. It is not a big problem here, and always a matter of taste. Just my humble opinion.

Sarah,

Wonderful! Although I've never been there, it sure looks like you've done a fabulous job of finding a fresh perspective for a location we see a lot images from.

Perhaps this may be a first for me where I'm actually loving the magenta coloration. The overall color is just soft and wonderful. The only thing I can think of to suggest is to shave off 1/3-1/2 of the sky. Of course a personal choice, but so much of the image is simply the layers, color and soft lighting that I don't think all that sky is needed. But quite a minor point.

Beautiful work.

Wonderful layers of pastel colors and texture. Quite beautiful, Sarah! The variation in lighting lends to the depth of the image. I'm not sure how this could even be improved.

Thank you to everyone for taking the time to leave a comment. I really appreciate it! I think I agree with Lon about loosing a small part of the sky. Thanks for that suggestion.

Hi Sarah

I like the many layers involved with this comp and the dark mysterious shadows. I would consider cropping half of the sky out, just above the pink band. The large brighter area of sky that lacks any detail or cloud texture competes for my attention. It is a minor loss of info but may create a more dynamic image, just something to consider.
