Hi and Greeting to all,

I am constantly wow by many of the amazing photos on the npn. A great learning place for me.

This is my first posting on the npn. Your comments and critiques will me very beneficial to me and are most welcome.

I took this photo in a local garden using 10D, 100mm macro, tripod. Exposure is f3.5, 1/30s at iso 200.

Thanks.

Welcome to NPN! I like your "head on" concept for giving depth to the image. I wish for a bit more of the flower in focus. As is there is tension between the frangipani blossom and buds. My feeling is that the buds position and lack of color makes them subordinate to the blossom, which doesn't work if the blossom is almost entirely out of focus and the buds almost entirely in focus.

Very nice first post. The focus on the center of the flower look good and the out of focus petals add a very artistic look. Welcome to NPN.

Welcome to NPN. Nice first post, which I find quite interesting because of the sharpness of the buds, but the softness of the blossom. I like the color and spiral motion of the flower, and see a few nice abstract compositions of just the flower. I dont think the buds really add a lot to this, so I might crop them if you can find a pleasing way to do so. Maybe a crop that just leaves the one nearest the flower?

Looking forward to seeing more!

Welcome to the gallery. I love the shape and softness of the bloom. Also the beautiful light. I also like the buds but they seem to compete a bit with the bloom for my tastes. I might consider cropping down from the top to a 4:5 aspect ratio to better emphasize the bloom. I'm looking forward to see more of your posts. Again, welcome to the gallery.

Welcome to NPN and floral. Its a great place to hangout and learn from the many masters of the art.

Love the spiral in the frangipani with its origin sharply focussed and fanning out to the soft petals. The flower itself is nicely done. As other has pointed out, the buds seem to compete. I like Pat's suggestion of a crop and may even try a square format leaving you only one bud to clone out.

Look forward to seeing more of your posts.

Hi Phil, Richard, Derek, Pat and Gary,

Thank you all for your comments, advice and suggestions. Initially I wanted to crop it to a square but are not sure about it. Here is the square version.

Here is the 4:5. What do think about the crop versions?

Let me first add my welcome to NPN. Great to have you on board. Of the three versions, I prefer the 4 x 5. It's a good compromise. I like the inclusion of a little more of the plant, but more emphasis on the interesting flower as presented in the cropped versions. Personally, I'd like to see the flower a little sharper. :wavey:

Welcome to NPN and the flora critque gallery. I like the flower and the spinning effect given by your choice of focus point. To eliminate the problem of more emphasis on the buds than the flower, how about cropping it to a square so it only incudes the open flower and one bud on the left. Suggestion only if you wish to try another composition without retaking the image. :wavey:
