Sundew Dinner
by Carl Battreall
Sundew, Connor's Bog, Alaska
This image was taken in the field as part of the Meet Your Neighbours Project.
I was given a tip by a local biologist that there were Sundews in a local park. I had seen pictures of Sundews but had never seen one in person. I spent hours searching but found nothing. Then while looking at a small spider on the ground, I spotted a Sundew. They are much smaller (the Alaska species) then I expected. It took four hours to get this image. First was finding the right petal, most are dirty and have dead bug parts on them. Then gently clearing around the Sundew so I could put the backlight and frontlight in position. Then getting the tripod on ground level and steady on the soft, muddy terrain.
Luckily, the Sundew is very good at catching prey and this poor chap landing on the one I was going to photograph!
In the end, all the hard work payed off.
Don't forget to explore your local wild areas and parks, there are many secrets to be found!

This a very striking image and all your hard work has paid off handsomely. For presentation, I agree with Phil about cropping the LLC and adding a 2-3 pixel border around this. Well done and congrats on making this image.
