Sharpe's Grysbok
by Morkel Erasmus
I photographed this shy, small antelope in the northern part of the Kruger Park in December 2009. They are lovely animals but elusive and only found in this area of South Africa.

4 commentsInteresting pose, interesting animal - can't say I've ever seen an image of one before. The light is quite sweet here and the pose is quite endearing. From a natural history perspective I find those small horns interesting - is this a young animal and/or a female? If so, do the older ones (or males) have larger horns? Just curious...
I like MOST of this image - I do find the out-of-focus foliage along the left side of the frame a little distracting and almost visually "confusing", especially the region to the left of (plus slightly above) the hind end - those near "swirls" of green pull my eye pretty strongly. The greens may well be accurate but to me seem almost a tad too punchy or overwhelming - if this were mine I'd probably experiment with pulling those back a bit? Just a thought...
Cheers...thanks for sharing this - nice seeing a Grysbok for the first time!

I liked the framing of the green foliage as it shows this little guy's natural habitat, which is dense, lush riverine forest.
@Brad - the bush during that summer was particularly green and vibrant due to higher-than-average rainfall...but will see what it looks like toned down a tad
