Sunsets with Rafa

We've just had the pleasure of having Rafael Rojas staying with us for the last week, and managed to punctuate our busy schedule with some late evening shooting. The coast of Asturias in northern Spain isn't too well-known and we've discovered some amazing locationssince we moved here in January.

This beach is 5 minutes from the house, and makes a very fine back yard.

D3x 24-70 24mm @ f10 1/8th for the details in the rocks and 30s with a 10 stop BW for the sky and ocean

That is really sweet light, Alister. The silhouetted arch is a nice focal point. Sort of wish for a bit more texture in the framing rocks in the foreground.

You had some amazing light.I also wish that the foreground rock would have bit more texture. Beautiful colors, too.

Love deep rich colors and mood here. Could be a bit brighter in the top right corner. I could see the arch rock in the distance being the center of another composition.

Surreal capture, Alister. Beautiful light. I too, though, wish there was a little more detail in the cliff face.

Tremendous color, and overall mood here! I have to agree about the amount of area covered by detailess black though. Not sure what you could have done other than added another exposure or two?

Thanks for the comments all. I did aim to keep this one "real" but I do have 7 exposures worth of details to play with. I may look at an option with more shadow details... Thanks for the feedback...

Further to the comments, I have reworked this image - Three shots, blended manually in CS5 - using Tony Kuyper's channel masks.

Alister,

Love the repost - thanks for taking the time to re-work the image. I felt there was almost no detail in the UR in original. The repost has detail, yet you've kept it real - in the sense of balancing of light. I think the added detail also improves the composition because the right is less "heavy" if that makes sense.

Oh, the colors, sea and sky? awesome. that arch stack in the bg makes me think of Lord of the Rings for some reason....

Nice work and not too shabby of a back yard.

I love this, especially the 2nd version posted. Just the right amount of detail in the rocks in that version. Beautiful reflected color too.
