Short-eared Owl

This male has a fight on his hands. Two males were competing for a female (who calmly watched the whole thing) by sky dancing, wing clapping and repeated attacks on each other. Their antics were so erratic and quick that it was very difficult to photograph. In this image the other owl had rocketed in at this bird while it was on the ground. At the last second this bird popped up off the ground and turned upside down to present its talons defensively. This was taken just after the other bird had passed above and to the right and this owl was beginning to right itself again.

It took a large crop to get the owl even this large in the frame and the leading edge of the left wing is a little bright but I still liked the shot, largely because of the unusual flight posture with a good look at the eye.

More images of this fighting behavior on my blog if you're interested.

7D, 1/1600, f/7.1, ISO 500, 500 f/4, 1.4 tc, shot from pickup window on 6/14/11 in southwest Montana, cropped to 43% of original image, small exposure adjustment in ACR, NR to background (due to large crop), sharpened bird, no additional processing or adjustments, natural light, not set up or baited

A sweet shot Ron. Sorry I missed all this action. Guess I was just overwhelmed with all the other birds. Love the talons up position, nice light, and great BG. Tough is not the word for this type of shot. I saw one battled like this and the speed of the birds is hard to discribe. Well done.

I love the dramatic eye and the unusual posture. Thanks for documenting the male competition so well in the photos and text of your blog. :toast:

I know how tough it was to get this one, Ron. No matter what the crop, it is a great capture.

Amazing action Ron. Is the owl looking over to see if the female was impressed??

Thanks May. I don't think so - he's looking too high for him to be looking at her. This all happened so very fast that I don't think even a hormone loaded owl would have had time to focus that quickly in the midst of such an acrobatic maneuver. It sure looks like that's what he could have been doing though...

A unique and fascinating image. I'd be happy to have something this good out of such a quick encounter.

Excellent shot Ron, the talons and those intense yellow eyes really make the shot. Great action and nice capture of the behavior,

Fascinating image Ron. What a joy this must have been to witness. I can see why you're so hooked on Red Rocks, which is where I assume you caught this action... just terrific work!

Excellent behavior capture, Ron. I hadn't realized Short-eareds bred down there; I think of them as tundra-breeding birds. You were blessed with a lot of light to be able to freeze this motion as f7.1. I really likes your blog posts, too.

Great shot! That has to be one of the most interesting poses I have seen for a Short Eared Owl.

I looked at your other images on your blog and they are awesome!
