Still Dreaming

Hello,

I hiked up to Dream Lake before sunrise at the beginning of the month while the ice was still melting in the hopes that the Ice in the foreground would yield a more original shot of this Rocky Mountain Icon. I am not sure about the composition. I hiked up a few more times trying different arrangements of the visual elements but this was the best sky I was able to capture out of 4 attempts.

Your thoughts and criticisms are always greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

5D Mk II, 16-35 L - Double exposure of the same Raw file.

I love the comp and the angle. All the elements flow toward the right of the image. The glassy reflections and smooth clouds soften the static nature of the jagged peaks. Very nice.

Hi Shaun - I admire your persistence in getting up there. Overall, I like the composition, processing, and overall mood of the image. The soft colors in the sky lend a feeling of tranquility, which I think is a nice complement to this kind of winter scene. I think the composition is strong, even though I might prefer the ice to continue to the left hand corner of the scene. Still, that is a minor point and this is overall a really beautiful image of Dream Lake.

Shaun,

I think an excellent composition and a great take on this oft-photographed location. Very subtle, but I like the submerged log that works as a very subtle lead-in line of the composition. Nice light on the peaks and great color in the sky. No nits really, congrats on the results of your persistence.

This is a beautiful shot, Shaun. Wonderful color throughout. I'm not sure if you used a polarizer to remove the glare from the water but this is one instance where it might be better to have the reflection in the foreground because of the reflected light which holds more interest than the rocks / branches beneath the surface. But that's just a minor nit on what is otherwise a fantastic shot.

One thing is for certain, I wish I could step right into this scene. I live in Amarillo, TX and it is a 106 degrees as I write this, and after setting an all time record high of 109 (dating back to 1892) two days ago we are on our way to break that record today. That is not the kind of record to be breaking. Thanks for sharing this...at least I can "Dream" it is cool outside!! :frown:

Ditto on the persistence. The comp flows well to my eye, and the photo layers nicely from front to back. My only thought would be to play a bit with bringing the luminosity down. These snow shot can be really high key, but letting parts of the photo darken leads to a more natural mix with the sky color and brings out the saturation.

This is very nice Shaun. Wonderful colors and reflection. The sky looks great and really helps set this wonderful winter scene off. I also think your comp worked quite well. I too would say your persistence paid off! Nice work Shaun.

I like this just fine, Shaun. The ice does add significant interest to the scene. as well as the warm/cool color contrasts.

The submerged details in combination with the ice make a wonderful foreground. The sweet light on the mountains top it off beautifully.

Very nice shot my friend. I wish we would have gotten conditions like this when we went up. This is a great addition to your portfolio.

Nice take on Dream Shaun. The FG does add a lot of interest for me, and I especially like the texture in the ice. For some reason, the comp feels a little off balance and my eye kind of falls out of the right hand side of the frame due to the seeming curvature/distortion there. I like a slight crop off the RHS just to the right of the largest crater in the FG and this makes everything else seem more balanced to my eye, however I know that's subjective. Love everything else here, nice work.

Love the fg interest and the reflection on the left. Feels a bit heavy to the right. Great color and light up top. Crackin' shot.
