Ikebana #8

Freestyle

Flowers:
Calla lily, Celosia. Asclepias, Aspidistra

This is a departure from the traditional forms and I know its will not find favour with Charlie with all those unnatural looking leaves.

I might surprise you some time. I recognize elements of this arrangement and I do like it better that their previous use, Gary you are an artist and must suffer we fools.

Those poor leaves - must have gone through a neat little roller for those undulations  . Is there an equivalent of PETA for Plant Life also  . Yellow, Green and Purples are a great combination, Gary and together they are pure magic. I am a sucker for blue over yellow. I like the placement of the two Callas - one looking at the viewer and one slightly slanted backwards showing everything there is to show for that flower. May be one of the best that I have liked so far from your arrangement.

Each one is better Gary. (smile)

My eyes are drawn by the undulations and curves in the leaves and the callas. I also like the colors there a lot. I like the purple violet colors but for me their shapes weaken the composition some for me. They're not wrong, they just don't add much interest for me aside from color. I don't mean to be hard on the comp. This strikes me as an incredibly difficult thing to do and this is better than any of my past efforts by far. I like the arrangement and the image as posted. I'd just try to simplify the arrangement.

Charlie:
I look forward to be surprised by you and it would indicate to me that you have shed the 'natural' baggage

Ram:
If there was a PETA equivalent it would be called PETP and lucky for me there is none in HK. According to Dalai Lama's definition, plants are not considered sentient beings and therefore bending leaves is not considered unethical  It is very easy to bend these leaves - just tape a piece of 20G wire to the back of the leave and just bend it any how you like; no wringer or rollers involved and therefore no pain or cruelty.

Pat:
The composition is dominated by lines and curves in the leaves and the calla. The Celosia and Asclepias been smaller and spot-like are there to break that dominance. I am glad you like the stark red and purple in the smaller flowers contrasting the yellow in the calla. The shape of the Asclepias is also deliberately chosen to counter the curves. You have a good eye for composition as in my original composition, there were a lot more Asclepias and my instructor removed a lot of them to simplify it.

Striking arrangement and image. Nice color combo. I like the yellow calla against the dark indigo (at least on my monitor) BG.

Well, I've come back to this 3 times now. Like it better each time.
LOVE the arrangement in general, but the contrasts of yellow and purple, to me, are exquisite. Then, those flowing leaves (so perfect they look artificial) send this over the top.
every one of these is better than the previous one.. just excellent seeing them and your growth!
Thanks for sharing this project with us!
