Turk's Cap Lily

I hate it when I don't get the color of my choice in the background. Why were they not growing some blue delphiniums behind this Lily patch  ?. I also found out one more thing - the petals curl up more and more as the sun rises. By afternoon, the Lily is'nt photogenic anymore.

ND200, 200mm F/4 Micronikkor, F/10 (funny that F/9 would not give me the DOF for the frontal petal), 1/50 Sec, Early morning dappled light streaming through the tree foliage, ISO200 and Tripod (with legs funnily spread all across a solid wooden fence).

Thanks a lot for your comments on Musk Mallow and do let me know what you think of this one.

PS : There is a small strand of spidy web..I wanted to clone it out but forgot.

Ram,

For my tastes this is perfect: point of view, plane of focus, dof, placement in the frame, unobtrusive appealing light, detail, processing. Should be in a text book.

Ram:
Its seems I have been working on Lily a lot lately - African lily, Amazon lily, Foxtail lily, Spider lily and Calla lily but I have not yet taken any Turk's Cap. The DOF is just perfect. I would not have tried F9 and F10 and would normally just jump from F8 to F11 - this is really a sign of your maturity in doing this meticulously and patiently. :toast: Everything about this image is perfect, including the bg

Very nice Ram. The natural light green BG is perfect for the orange lily. Everything is perfect except for that spider web which ruins the whole image.

This looks perfect to me. Not sure I ever want to get critical about images like this.

Great image. A delphimium might have been nice but this bg works as is. Beautiful detail.

Beautiful as always! Question, coming from the Avian gallery I have to ask if that is a halo effect on the rh edges of the browns? Is that a sharpening artifact or an issue at all?

Sharpening artifact. My focus was slightly ahead of the pollen pods and they being sharper than the rest (truly speaking) sharpening added for the rest of the picture might have resulted in a bit of a halo there. Thanks for pointing it out.

This lily is a wonderful subject. Glad you caught this one when the curves of the petals are so graceful. As much as I like orange and blue (my school colors) I think this background works just fine. The bokeh at f/10 here looks great -- like it was painted for studio work.

Ah yes, another lily. I agree the bg may not be as vibrant as you might like but the details are great. I really have to look hard to see the slight softness of the front petal you mentioned. It's barely noticeable. Love the tilted stem.

Ram: Hard to improve on perfection but I guess that since you didn't get the BG you wanted you can send me the RAW file and spare yourself the angst over this image. Really good photography. >=))>

Ram - You handled the petal sheen really well. I can't even tell ya how many Lily (Canada, Turk's Cap) images i tossed over the years due the high gloss petals (even with a polarizer). I can't nit either. So i'll sit and admire!
