Spotted Flycatcher
by John Robinson
Thin on the ground these days. This one nested behind a door hinge. Strangely, a pair nested in the same place in 2008 and fledged 3 young. They nested in the same place in 2009 and were predated. The same happened in 2010. They were successful this year. But where did the birds come from to use the same spot ?? Surely they can't have survived since 2008?? Is it just the site that draws birds for some reason.
I think they are set for a second brood in the same nest.

Interesting commentary on nest site, they do seem loyal to nesting in some strange open public places - door lintles/coving etc. 5 years old is not too unusual for passerines is it so it possibly is the same original adults?
For anyone left wondering why spotted flycatchers are so called when the adults are predominantly striped...... you really need to see the fledged juveniles then it all makes sense!
