I liked the rugged look of this guy and the textures in the bg.

1DMkIV, 500mm f4 IS + 1.4TC, Black Widow on Gitzo legs, f13, 1/500, iso 1000, Av mode with -2/3 compensation. Normal processing in CS4, cropped from horizontal to vertical and a touch more taken off the top for balance. 7.8 MP left.

I always appreciate your comments and criticisms.

Thanks for looking.

Rich colors with a nice perch and good details.

Nice one Dennis, Good detail.
I like the head-turn pose, perch, background, and catch-light. My only suggestion would be to lighten it a little. I think that would really make it pop.

Rugged and oh so sweet. Great pose perch and bg. Might need a tweek of brightness?

I think the perch adds to that "rugged" look you speak of Dennis, along with the grubby beak..
Great detail, BG, and I love those reds..Can't beat Canon
You missed a few spots directly above the birds head, but I'm picking on ya again..
Well done! :toast:

This all works for me Dennis. Good light on the finch, the head is sharp, nice head turn, a clean look at the bird and I really like that background.

There's a lot of depth here, Dennis. Love the comp, colors and detail. The only thing I'd consider here is to darken the perch a bit where white is showing. Nice one.

Outstanding shot, Dennis. Wonderful color, detail and great perch! I like the dark look and I'm fine with the lighting of the perch.

Vivid colors, great perch, and I like the textured BG. I also think a bit more brightness would work.

Wonderful look at this guy! Terrific detail in the plumage. I too might bring the brightness up a bit.

Nice finch; good detail. The composition feels unbalanced with too much empty space above.

Great head turn Dennis, beautiful natural colors, pose light and look at the eye. There is just a tiny bit of a halo around the bill that I would work on before archiving this fine shot.

Very nice shot of this Finch - they are skittish up here at the only spot I know where they appear.

Wonderful pose and background to this, it does appear a little dark to me so I like the other suggestions as well to maybe brighten it up just a bit. With that wonderful background I might experiment with a horizontal crop showing more canvas to the right. Very colorful finch, nice job in getting this.

I think that he is as rugged looking as a Finch can be. Perfect beak position for the position he is in.Very nice capture -I struggle to get the nice detail in the reds.Well done!

Reds are so much deeper than our House Finches here, Dennis. Well captured, but I think I agree that at least a slight lightening might work. You've got all the detail and head turn, though.

Here's a repost with just a bit more off the top at Richard's suggestion and lightened 15 points. I also took out the two offending spots that Howard noticed.

Yes, I do find that having the bird occupy more of the framed area as in the repost does make us appreciate this beautiful bird image even more, Dennis.
