a South Texas specialty - they range into the US only in S. TX and SW Oklahoma. A very noisy and beautiful bird! They also have a beautiful golden lower breast, not visible in this image.

Very nice Sandy, good capture with a nice complimentary background. I have to say, I've never seen one of these before and didn't even know they existed much less in our country and it's a real beaut of a bird. :toast:

Real nice head turn with that pose from a striking subject Sandy. I particularly enjoy the black and white patterns on the back and wings.

Excellent,Sandy. I like your dof, keeping the whole bird and tree trunk in focus. It's cool that you can see both feet from this viewpoint.

I have never heard of this woodpecker before and will have to go read about this in my bird books, very interesting. I like the head turn, colors and overall composition, nice job in getting this, way to go.

It's really a beautiful and distinctive bird - they are fairly common within their very small range.

That's some really neat coloring on the head, Sandy. Great head turn, and detail in the shot. Pretty wide stance, so he must have been going at it pretty hard. Well done.

Lovely detail and pose Sandy - great shot. In Australia, when a bird is called a ......-fronted it refers to the frons just above the bill. It maybe the same for this species??

cheers
