Joshua Tree

Thanks for your comments on Maine Birches. Thought I go to the opposite corner of the country for my next contribution to the flora forum's "Trees" theme. This is of a Joshua Tree taken at sunrise/moonset in Joshua Tree N.P. in So. Cal. Image taken on Velvia with a Nikon F5. Of course, this image is cheating. I'll let someone else say why I am cheating.

I spent a little over a year stationed nearby at Twenty Nine Palms Scott. This is possibly my favorite habitat in the world and you've done a great job presenting it here. We always talked about the mystique of the desert and this captures it as well as any image I've seen. The only thing I might consider doing is cloning out the silhouette in the lower right corner of the tree in the distance that is masking the foreground subject silhouette. That's a complete nit of course. Love the moon framed in this.

Scott:
You must be saving up all your killer tree shots for this week. Another winner here. I like the gradient lighting and the moon framed by the limbs of the tree. :toast:

Well taken and composed! The sunset colors are to die for! There is distinct haloing on the silhouette edges that can be easily removed.

Yes, Phil, you're right. Occured when downsizing this file for the web. Too much of a rush doing this before heading off to work. Prints made from the original drumscan are sharp and w/o artifacts.

Thanks, Gary. I was looking forward to this theme when Bill announced it several weeks ago.

I've enjoyed sunset at Joshua Tree a couple of times and your picture reminds me of how great it can be with the soft graduated colors in the sky and all of the great "tree" shapes. The framing of the moon is a great addition. Of course Joshua Trees aren't really trees, they're just tall Yuccas.

Yes, Mark, you're right. That's why I said when I posted it that I was cheating. Technically, it doesn't fit the theme! :wavey:

Cheat schmeat, it's still a great image. They certainly look like trees. Great silhouette's and position of the half moon.

Scott:

I don't think you cheat. If you look at Bill's announcement below:

For the week of July 24-30 we want to celebrate big Flora - Trees. Any interpretation is fair game. We'll take landscapes where trees are the dominant subject, leaves, blossoms, etc. If it grows big it goes. >=))>

This grows big so it goes.

Great lesson in the use of silhouette Scott, love the very early light & graduated colors of the BG.
Like the way you've frame the crescent moon in this comp too..
Did you see the cow jump over it as well?
Sorry, couldn't help myself
I used to live in Joshua Tree, Ca. many "moons" ago..
But that was during my other life (BC).. i.e. - Before Camera
Well done :toast:
