A Puffin with a View

For this Puffin image I decided to use a shorter telephoto lens so that I could capture the Puffin's environment as well as the bird. My idea was to leave the background in focus just enough so that the viewer could recognize the background, but not so sharp that it would compete with the Puffin.

Canon 5D

This one grabbed my attention from the thumbnail. The large version is particularly nice. Good job at visualizing and then capturing the shot. Puffins are one my favorites. :toast:

Very nicely composed from the bird's perspective. You have to love puffins!

I like this a lot - really shows the birds habitat and I like how it is looking out on its domain so to speak

Well conceived and executed, Carol. Looks like pretty bright light; there's some glare off the bird, and the whitish rock is mighty bright. If it were mine, I'd pull the brightness down across the whole photo just a little bit, and then selectively try to reduce the glare from the bird.

All too often I reckon we photographers get caught with the desire to fill our frames with a subject, largely because we're showing relatively small-sized images on the net and we want to show off as much detail as possible, so no doubt countless opportunities like this are overlooked in the field.

Your wonderfully composed image serves as a good reminder for me to be always on the lookout for such potential, many thanks for sharing this one Carol and thanks for the inspiration :^)

I really like what you did here. It makes me feel like I'm actually there with the puffin sitting just a few yards away from the rock.

Well done here. I like the vastness of the open ocean as he looks out.
