Our Northern variety of this bird which varies somewhat with a blacker back, less white and black in the face than the birds we saw while in California. We don't see this bird every year and haven't this year. This was taken in May 2008. Forgive a bit of noise softness etc as I never used a tripod at that time.

Olympus E-510
50-200mm F2.8-3.5
1/320 sec @ F4 0.0EV
no flash
ISO 400
manual focus
crop to approx 80% of FF

Large view provided

Thanks for C&C.

a neat angle on the bill and head, Charlie. the softness and noise do detract for me though. I think the focus may have been a little too far forward if you look at the perch, the part of the perch in front of the bird (and the tip of the bill) seem sharpest.

Cool bird and I like the pose and the view of both eyes. I agree with Brian about the softness.

And I agree with both of you. I have many great opportunities that I blew before getting some education here on NPN. I'll show some for what they are worth and like that honest critiques come forth.

Too bad about the front focus, but a pleasant image. It has good colors, bg, and an interesting comp.
