I believe this is a Long-leaved Paintbrush or Desert Painbrush (Castilleja linarifolia) that I photographed in the Bodie Hills on July 30, 2011. Shortly afterwards a thunderstorm chased us out of the hills.
Canon 60D, 18 to 200mm lens set at 100mm, 1/160 sec at f.9.0, iso 400, aperture priority, pattern metering mode.
Comments and Criticism welcome.

Beautiful bouquet of paintbrush, with a great frame of the dead wood.
Too bad the creek was up and you could not make it to Bodie. Lon and I had a great time kicking around the old town.

Sandy,
I don't think I've even seen this variety of paintbrush before. This is what bush lupine is like to the lupine family... lovely, soft colors here.
Hey, thanks for all your reports. It was because of your Bodie Hills report that Harley and I took that Aurora Canyon road through the Bodie hills all the way from Bridgeport to Bodie. A bit of rough road in spots and we did cross some water and I could see a couple of spots where rains and run off could have been trouble. But we made it all the way, no problem. And just about 2.5-3mi before Bodie, a couple hillsides were covered in dozens of varieties of flowers - it was beautiful! It was mid-day and the wind was blowing pretty hard so we didn't bother stopping, but it's definitely a point for future reference! I think you would have had a field day up there. Maybe next year!
