Triple Falls at Sunset

I took this photo about two weeks ago up in Glacier NP assisting Mr. Rossbach on a tour. It was still way too early for many wildflowers, as I'm sure many of you know, but there were still plenty of awesome things to shoot. Six days was not anywhere close to enough time for me in that park and I can't wait to return. Montana is awesome!

16mm, polarizer, 1 sec/.3 sec, f/14, ISO 200

Thanks for looking.

I love it! Perspective, range, water flow, color, sky, detail: it all comes together nicely for me. :toast:

Spectacular image! A tad oversaturated for my taste though.

Wow, you sure lucked out with the light there! Fantastic. I love the highlighting on the distant peak. Overall it comes across as bit contrasty and saturated for my taste, and the darkness of the blues in the sky is throwing me off a bit.

Alex,

The light here is almost surreal - very warm and beautiful. A grand landscape and wonderful capture of these falls and of Glacier NP in general.

I wouldn't call this a nit, but rather an observation/question. The snowbank in the center of the frame appears to be liking a hanging glacier or something? With the darkness beneath, there is no reference of what the snow is sitting on. Am I seeing things or does anyone else pick this up? doesn't spoil the image for me at all, it's just one of those illusions I guess.

Great work.

Thank you all for the comments so far. Lon, don't worry, you aren't just seeing things! The snow really isn't sitting on anything. All of the snow and ice beneath it had already melted away, and the uppermost part that you see here was all that was left.

One of the best shots of these double falls that I've seen. I tend to agree with both Floris's and Lon's observations but this is wonderful image just as it is.

I could see a pull back on the saturation, but this is such a great location and your composition is excellent. Then the sky gave you such icing on this gorgeous cake. Man, I love me some Glacier! :toast:

Gorgeous. I, for one, love the saturated color and contrast. Looks like digital Velvia. Viewing this as a vertical makes your eyes flow through the scene probably even better than the horizontal version from Joe I've seen. The position of the clouds above only reinforces the nice flow. Wonderful job!

Montana is Awesome and so is this photograph. It's got everything happening for me and all the color in the natural world.
The saturation is a fraction high on my monitor and I would recommend that you try to lighten the foreground just a little.
Hope this helps.

What a crazy place. You were lucky with the weather of course - the clouds are lovely. I like the way you composed the scene and although the water stands out nicely in front of the dark hole, I find it a bit too dark.

Awesome shot, Alex. Amazing scenery and what a fabulous sky! Perhaps a tad over-saturated in the reds, but a super shot none the less. Nice one!

Killer light my friend. You did this scene proud. Heading to Glacier with Joe was a good choice. I really like how this illuminates at sunset. I shot it with back lighting at sunrise which makes the exposures a real challenge.

I'm glad you had a chance to visit the falls - I was there last year and the rangers told me it was off limits due to the sensativity of the area. The hanging snow field makes this a unique shot. WOnder if you shot up the falls with the snow fiel in the FG? So many possibilities. Monther nature put on a great light show as well. A beauty!

Wow Alex! One of the best I have seen from here for sure. Love that moody sky. Maybe I would add a little more contrast to the peaks in the back with the most light on them. :toast:

The park service is letting people hike off trail through sensitive meadows to get down here now? It's a great shot, but there's a reason you don't see it every day.
