Steigtind, Arctic Norway
by Svein-Frode
Steigtind is one of those mountains that are instantly recognizable for anyone living in Arctic Norway. Just 739 meters high, but majestic nontheless. This is showing the North face of the mountain. Light is always challenging from this angle, but this was one of those lucky nights. Hiking about an hour from the nearest road takes you to this area of the tundra with lots of small ponds - perfect for foreground interest.

13 commentsA majestic peak for sure and you're certainly right about the nice foreground interest created by this pond and tufts of grass. I like the straight forward and simple composition here. My only suggestion has to do with the overall brightness and punch. I realize the light and angle of light from where you are would certainly be challenging, but from a processing perspective I think this could use a little punch and luminosity; even the color/sat could be boosted slightly. Then again, that's getting in to an area of personal choice too, so don't consider that I'm saying you need to fix it, not at all.
Lovely scene and the comp brings me right there.

In this shot I've tried to keep the light natural and faithful to the original scene. This is after sunset and the entire place is lit by pink clouds in the sky, warming the tones of the landscape which is entirely in shadow. It would be no problem of course to add one stop of exposure to the foreground, then boost contrast and saturation. In fact, if I were to include this in a "commercial" portfolio of sorts, I'd probably do that.
